Description and applications
2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is an organic compound with the formula C7H5NS2. It consists of a benzothiazole ring with a mercapto (-SH) group attached at the 2-position. MBT is widely used as a vulcanization accelerator in the rubber industry, enhancing the cross-linking process during rubber manufacturing and improving its elasticity and durability. It is also employed in the production of corrosion inhibitors, fungicides, and other specialty chemicals. Due to its sulfur content and reactivity, MBT can be toxic, so appropriate safety precautions are necessary during handling and use. It is valuable for its chemical properties in industrial applications.
